Moodboard
Mood boards allow designers to convey inspiration and communicate creative ideas in a graphic manner. Effective moodboards:
Find images that inspire your project idea. Include images to give little hints about:
- are not too overwhelming and intentionally leave some blank (negative) space
- Use no more than 5-10 images
- Include physical fabric swatches
- Feature a mixture of physical and digital elements
- Include labels and annotations to explain why each image has been included
Find images that inspire your project idea. Include images to give little hints about:
- colours
- textures
- fabrics
- shapes/silhouettes
- manufacturing techniques
- prints
- feelings
- text
- any other elements and principles of design
- use text such as individual words, quotes, song lyrics
- use text to label/identify and justify the inclusion of images
In order to create an effective mood board you must consider:
- Colour scheme – should be in line with the intended design colour scheme. Include colour swatches
- Orientation – portrait or landscape
- Layout – layering of images, grids are too boring. Images other than squares/rectangles.
- Text – no heading. Consider font type and size as well as the idea conveyed by the words used. Label elements in moodboard
- Blank space – ensure that you have intentional blank space to allow the eyes to focus
- Image selection – convey the mood without over cluttering or overwhelming. Don’t include two images that convey the same thing, select the best one
- Content – include a variety, not just fashion. Consider food, architecture, textiles, interior design, product design, paint swatches, household items, nature, landscapes
- Focal Point - Make sure your mood board has a focal point so your eye can be drawn into one spot and then move around the mood board
- Balance - Your mood board should be well balanced. Balance should include colour, texture, and size and can be achieved by placement of your images.
- Mediums – Use a combination of elements to complete your moodboard. Start creating it electronically with Photoshop or InDesign. Then add physical objects once it’s printed such as samples of fabric, yarn, trims, lace, buttons, magazine cut-outs, etc. and add hand drawn or hand painted elements.
Relevance to Focus Area
Select which one of the 5 Focus Areas your project fits into - Apparel, Costume, Non-apparel, Furnishings or Textile Art.
First, you must decide upon your project’s intended end use. This will allow you to correctly categorise your design.
Write out the definition of this focus area from the textbook and justify how your project meets this criteria.
Explain the target user for your project.
Decide upon another focus area that your project could fit into. Make sure this is RELEVANT and come up with reasons why it does not fit this focus area.
Consider factors such as:
Instructions
Start your opening paragraph with an overview of your key inspirations and brief description of your project. Define your focus area and justify why your project best meets this area. For a focus area which may be close to the one you’ve selected, refer to it and explain why your project doesn’t fit into this area. Do not refer to distant focus areas, for example, do not explain why an apparel item does not fit into furnishings. Bold key words for emphasis. Describe your target market without calling them your target market. Age, sex, etc. Paint a picture of them. What are they like? Where would it be worn or used?

Cultural / Contemporary / Historical Inspiration
Identify and explain factors that might have influenced your design's features (colours, fabrics, motifs, patterns, etc). You should make reference to one particular designer/artist/architect/creative in each section and explain how their work has influenced your design.
1. Choose a theme
2. Find a fashion designer/architect/artist/product designer/etc who has used the same inspiration in their work
3. State the specific elements and principles of design that they have used to show this inspiration.
4. Relate this to which elements and principles you will use in your project to show this inspiration.

Justification of Innovation & Creativity
Innovation is using an original idea to create something new, bold, daring, different, unusual or unprecedented. It is a new idea or a new way of doing things. It can be shown through:
vRearranging, reorganising, restructuring, transforming
vRepurposing items
vUsing recycled items
vSustainable methods
vExperimenting with new technology
vCreating new materials
vApplying existing ideas or techniques to new applications
State what elements of creativity have been inspired by your inspiration sources. For each technique discussed, detail where it is used on your work and the effects created by this technique or feature. Explain why you have chosen this technique, in relation to its link to your inspiration. Ensure that your discussion of the techniques you have used is linked to your inspiration.
Creativity is using your imagination or original ideas to create something. It can be shown through:
vPattern alteration
vCreation of pattern pieces
vUsing traditional techniques for contemporary purposes
vIncorporation of manufacturing/decorative techniques
vChoice of specialised fabrics
vUse of elements and principles of design
vPortrayal of a story
