Elements & Principles of Design
Activity 2 – Teacher to explain the elements and principles of design. Students to use magazines to create a collage of examples of each of the elements and principles of design in use. Ss to photograph or scan their work and include in digital portfolio.
Critical Analysis
Activity 3 – Students to work in pairs to focus on one example of a charity poster from they classroom that they think is effective. Students to complete a verbal PMI critiquing the poster. Students to comment on the following elements:
-Colours used
-Font types (legibility)
-Font size (headings, subheadings, body text, etc.)
-Images (number of images and type of image)
-Logos, contact details, websites, etc. other elements included on poster.

Week 2 Practical: Canva
Activity 4 - Choose a Charity & Research
Choose a charity or not for profit organisation of your choice and research them on Google. Look at their website as well as on Google Images and save some examples of advertisements and events that you find into your digital portfolio. Next to these examples answer the following:
1. What colours are associated with this charity?
2. What colours are used in the logo?
3. What kind images are used in their posters?
4. Looking at the font on the advertisement, what changes do you see? (For example, size, colour, font type, etc.)
5. Who is this advertisement appealing to?
6. What information is on the advertisement?
7. Do you think this advertisement is effective? Why or why not?
8. How can you make your advertisement fit with the brand of this charity? (For example, by using similar colours, images of the same thing, etc.).
Activity 5 - As a class, develop the criteria for success for an effective charity advertisement. After creating a class brainstorm of the things that make an advertisement poster effective, select the 5 most important criteria to consider when designing your poster to ensure it is successful and to help evaluate your work on completion.
Activity 6 - Design a poster for the charity or not for profit organisation that you have researched. Your poster should be easy to read, professional and clearly show the audience what the charity is about. You should use pictures, text and colours to help you convey a powerful message to the viewers. Your design should be appropriate to be displayed on a bus stop shelter for motorists and pedestrians to view.
Your poster must include:
1. Visit the Canva website
2. sign up to create an account using your school email or login if you already have an account
3. Create your poster. If you are having difficulty navigating the website, you can watch the tutorial video below for some help
4. Download your poster and save it into Week 2 of your digital portfolio.
5. Upload your work on to Google Classroom for your teacher and peers to review.

- The name of the charity and/or the logo of the charity (this text should be the biggest)
- Information about the cause of the charity or the event (this text should be smaller than the name of the charity)
- A website, QR code or phone number advising how people can find out more information and donate (this text should be the smallest on the poster and at the bottom of the poster)
- A colour scheme relevant to the charity or event
